Firefox allows launching with multiple preset tab URLs.
I use this to open my standard complement of about a dozen sites that
are important to me on a continuing basis throughout the day.
This saves all sorts of time in opening each site individually as a new tab.
However, I also want to launch Firefox as a clean slate, without any tabs open.
And, I also want to launch Firefox with a themed set of URLs that
would be open instead of my standard set. For example, when I am
editing the HTML for some of my websites.
Therefore, I am looking for at least 3 different ways of opening
Firefox, but the Menu/Tools/Options/HomePage allows only one way. I'm
thinking that there should be a way to create multiple different
Desktop Shortcuts that would do the trick. I'll bet this has been
done already... |

Here is a more detailed explanation:
1. Close firefox completely.
2. Click on Run, then type "firefox.exe -p" (without the quotes) and
press enter You can also type "firefox.exe -profilemanager".
3. Create a new profile. Call it "secondary" if you like. I will use
this as an example later.
4. Open Control Panel, System Properties, click on Advanced tab, then
click on Environmental Variables button.
5. Under "System Variables", click New, Under "Variable Name" type
"MOZ_NO_REMOTE", then under "Variable value" type "1". (all without
quotes)
6. Click Ok until all of the windows are closed. I believe it is 3 times.
7. Create 2 new Firefox icons on your desktop, quick launch, or where
ever you would like. One shortcut should launch "C:\Program
Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p "default" and the other shortcut
should launch "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -p
"secondary" (with the quotes!) I used "secondary" as my example.
Now you can launch two different instances (processes) which are under
different firefox profiles. You can have different bookmarks,
settings, etc. as a result.

i re-read the instructions (RTFM) and noticed that i had not exited
from all Firefox windows before the Run.
once i did that, i got the option to create a new profile, which i
thought i did correctly

unfortunately, i can not get that approach working.
i got into the creation of a profile ok, from the run window.
and when i create a new profile, it seems to work ok,
but then when i create a shortcut to launch that new profile
and one to create the default profile
these different shortcuts seem to load whatever profile is already loaded.
i'm thinking that this multiple profile approach could have some
unwanted side effects. for one, all my settings, favorites, and
plug-ins need to be carried over to the new profile(s), which is a
nasty joy and would require multiple profile maintenance.
would there be some other option to load selected URLs from the command line?

I'm sorry that didn't work for you. Unfortunately, I haven't been able
to find any other method. Hopefully another researcher will be able
to.

No, you don't have to ask the question again. Since I didn't post
anything in the Answer Box, the question is still unanswered.
