I am running microsoft windows ME. I seem to have done something to
it. When I try to start MSPaint I get the error message "MS Paint has
caused an error in MFC42.DLL MS Paint will now close."
then MS Paint closes.
I have tried deleting and reinstalling mspaint from the windows setup
part of the add/remove programs section of controll panel.
How can I get paint working again?

Greetings ballanson,

Most likely what has happened is that the MFC42.DLL file has been
overwritten or corrupted by another application that has been
installed. With this being a Windows system file, re-installing MS
Paint won't correct the problem.

What I would suggest doing is to extract the original version of the
MFC42.DLL file from your Windows ME cab files to your Windows system
directory and overwrite the one you have now. This should fix your
problem with MS Paint, however, it might cause other applications to
not function properly (if they require a newer or modified version of
this file), so you may end up having to re-install some other apps as
well if they end up not working after the file is restored.

Since MFC42.DLL is a Windows protected file in Windows ME, you'll need
to follow these instructions from Microsoft to restore the file:

To extract and replace a file that is protected by the System File
Protection feature in Windows Me:

1. Start your computer in Safe mode. To do this, restart your
computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer
completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose Safe Mode
from the Startup menu.

2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to
System Tools, and then click System Information.

3. On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility to start the
System Configuration Utility tool.

4. In the System Configuration Utility tool, click Extract File.

5. In the Extract one file from installation disk dialog box, type the
name of the file that you want to extract, and then click Start.

6. In the Restore from box, type c:\windows\options\install or type
the custom location of the installation files.

NOTE: Use c:\windows\options\install if you installed a Windows Me
retail product, or c:\windows\options\cabs if your computer
manufacturer installed Windows Me.

7. In the Save file in box, type c:\.

8. Click OK to extract the file, and then click Yes to create a folder
for the extracted file.

9. Drag the extracted file from the folder on drive C to the location
of the file that you replaced, and then click Yes to overwrite the
file.

10. Restart your computer.

If you extract a file directly to the destination folder to replace a
file that is protected by the System File Protection feature, you may
receive the following error message:

Extract File
The specified file is protected and may not be copied or deleted.
Some files are used in Safe mode and you cannot replace them while
they are in use (such as the Wsock32.dll file). To replace these
files, use the Extract command that is included on the Windows Me
Startup disk.

You can extract files directly to the destination folder when you
start your computer with the Startup disk.

The default source folder for Microsoft Windows installation files is
the C:\Windows\Options\Install folder.

If you need to make a Startup disk to run Extract, use the following
steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.

3. On the Startup Disk tab, click Create Disk.

I hope that helps to answer your question and get you on the right
track to restoring your MS Paint to working order. If you don't want
to try the above mentioned method, you could always try using System
Restore and going back to a date in which you know that MS Paint was
working (if your restore points go back that far). Between those two
options, one of them should get you back going again.

Please don't hesitate to ask for clarification if you need further
assistance.

Sincerely,
PWizard

Hullo pwizard, Thanks for your detailed reply. I really learned a lot
from all the detail you sent me and visited the links . I had a bit of
trouble doing what you said because I could not make my computer go
into safe mode so I did a restore. It worked except if you try to make
paint load a non bmp file it hangs and does not give an error message.
Any way the people who sold me the thing now believe they ought to
have a look at it. I am currently studying backup before I take it to
them.
Thanks again Bob
