I am looking for a short-list (2-3) of large web hosting firms who can
host and manage the engineering operations of a respectably-sized
internet site (xM unique visitors per day). I am looking for a
complete operations solution covering environmental management,
hardware installation and service, software configuration (Apache,
Tomcat, MySQL, etc), and network engineering. The firm MUST be able
to deliver extremely reliable uptime for the site, through a
combination of fault-tolerance and high-availability. Physical
disaster recovery options are a plus.
My team will procure and retain ownership of all hardware as well as
software licensing. We will also provide all content and web
development for the site and require minimal engineering involvement
as part of our content publication process. We will also provide
network access and security to our internal corporate intranet, based
on strict requirements with periodic audits.
The short-listed firms will be reputable, and sufficient in size and
operation to support daily operation of the site plus occasional
engineering projects. They will own and/or occupy one or more
top-tier data centers, preferably with one in the San Francisco Bay
Area, and have multiple high-bandwidth internet access options. The
firm will preferably resell internet bandwidth usage as part of their
service offering.
I do NOT want a list of firms that only offer colocation services, are
not large enough to provide dedicated engineering resources, or are
otherwise unable to fully manage site architecture and engineering and
a relationship with a Fortune 100 client. They must be able to
provide day-to-day systems engineering, network engineering, data
center operations, and environmental management independently, and
dedicate account team resources to managing the client relationship.
