I have rather unpleasant news. I have requested information from the
press department of the company owning Sportingbet.com, but they are
obviously arrogant enough not to reply at all yet. This is extremely
annoying.
I have just sent a second request to the company's press office.
Should they prove to remain uncommunicative, there will, alas, not
much else I can do since there seem to be no alternative sources of
information with details about those statements.

It may be of interest to note the listing at sportingbet.com of the
currencies they accept for account deposit:
British Pounds GBP
US Dollars USD
Canadian Dollars CAD
Hong Kong Dollars HKD
Singapore Dollars SGD
Swedish Krona SEK SK
Danish Krone DKK DKr
Euro EUR euro
Swiss Francs CHF
Australian Dollars AUD
Japanese Yen JPY
I wonder if their references to 23 currencies is outdated? Perhaps it
harks back to the pre-Euro days, when there were many more currencies
afloat in Europe.
Just a thought...!

Hello:
According to The London Stck Exchange, Sportingbet was launched in
1998 and welcomed by the exchange in 2001. Within their welcome they
stated that "Sportingbet was accepting wagers from 103 countries and
23 currencies."
The Euro was introduced in 1999 and launched in 2002 or one year
after Sportingbet went public.
Sportingbet could be referring to pre-Euro, I suppose.
We might as well wait for the press department to respond to your email.
According to our research, online gambling is only legal in 84
countries and NOT 103; then again, they could have been breaking the
law or blowing their exposure out of proportion?

Hello jacjon-ga,
Regarding your question above: "According to our research, online
gambling is only legal in 84 countries and NOT 103; then again, they
could have been breaking the law or blowing their exposure out of
proportion?"
Not necessarily: if your research refers to countries where online
gambling is explicitly legal, other countries may have no legislation
at all regarding online gambling -- a lack of legislation about a
practice doesn't make it illegal. This is suggested in keystroke-ga's
answer to your previous question:
"There are many more countries in the world in which there are no laws
governing online gambling (or even gambling, for that matter) at all."
(http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=772955 ) According to
a research I did about one year ago, that was the case in Argentina;
even if new legislation (which I didn't research to confirm) included
it amid the countries where it is legal (according to keystroke-ga's
list), it makes a good example of my statement about the difference of
it being illegal vs. not explicitely legal: "since there's absolutely
no legislation regarding online gambling in Argentina, a resident in
this country is committing no legal offense whatsoever by doing so.
Argentine law allows any person of age (21 years old or more) to
gamble in a legal casino or similar established in Argentine
territory, so in case that a judge decided to apply a territorial law
to an internet case, age should be the only restriction to consider."

(Sorry for a too quick posting) Bottom line: Sportingbet might be
receiving bets from more than 84 countries without infringing the law
in any of them.

I must apologize; not even one of the company's departments I
contacted considered it appropriate to reply. This behaviour is
incredible and certainly not a sign of business culture.
I am very sorry for not being able to answer your question, and I hope
that one of my colleagues will do better than I did.
