Question ID: 772979
I would like to have my Navy ribbons embroidered on the front of a
ball cap. I sent a photo of the ribbon bar (four rows) to the
following service

http://www.embroiderysuperstore.com/embroidery/

but they responded by saying they couldn't work from a photo, that I
would have to send them the image in the form of graphic artwork. When
I requested clarification, they replied as follows:

"By artwork form, I am speaking of using graphic software and designing
the bars and printing the graphic with colors from photo. The artwork
needs to be printed with ink, the same way a letterhead or stationery
would be. Photos are too difficult to digitize from w/embroidery."

I had such embroidery done several years abo by a company that was
able to work from a photo and do a fine job of it, but I have no
receipt from that company nor do I recall its name.

Two questions:

First, I don't really understand what it is that the Embroidery
SuperStore expects me to do. Design from scratch the twelve ribbons
mounted on the ribbon bar and then send them the printed result? With
ink? What kind of ink? The ink that's used in a standard ink jet
printer? How could a company like this expect typical retail customers
to create such designs?

Secondly, are there other similar online embroidery services that
could work from a high res photo?

Thnaks for accepting this as the answer to your question, nautico-ga.

First, the Embroidery Superstore is a commercial operation, used to doing
embroidery jobs in the hundreds and thousands of pieces. That means their
usual way of doing business is to receive original artwork from the person
hiring them, and then inputting that design, usually through a digitization
process, into their embroidery machines.

They could have probably worked from a direct scan of your ribbon bar, saved
and sent to them in one of the general image formats, such as JPEG.

That is still what you probably want to do, except with an operation used to
working on single pieces. Find someone with a color scanner, such as one of
the "all-in-one" scanner/printers out there, and ask them to scan your ribbon
bar, and save it to a JPEG file.

Then you can email it to a small shop used to doing small runs, such as Star
Enterprises.

"Our creativity begins with your photograph that you send us. The artwork is
hand drawn by our artists into the computers and then sent to our sewing
machines for the finished products."

There is also "Fish 'N' Stitches" as well.

You can read more about the digitization process on this "Fish 'N' Stitches"
page.

One more thing, nautico-ga.

You might want to also send a photograph of a cap with the ribbon bar placed
where you want the embroidered version to appear, along with a note on the
expected size of the desired end embroidery.

Just received from EmbroideryFromPhotos:

"Sorry, we do not do 1 cap. You would have to order 6 at $25ea."

It's back to the drawing board.

Sorry to hear this, nautico-ga.

Was that the response from both Star Enterprises and Fish 'N' Stitches?

If so, tell me, and I will try my best to locate another place. Thanks!

"Unfortunately, it would not be possible to recreate those types of
ribbons in embroidery. They are woven things, and in embroidery it
just wouldn't work. Sorry about that.-Fish'N'Stitches"

Gee!!!
