That is a nice thought, but a vintage 1966 rosé or white wine is very
likely to "be over the hill" by now. Only the rarest of them -
usually sweeter dessert type wines - keep so long.

Under fifty pounds is also a problem. If you can find a 1966 wine on
the market for that price, it would be very surprising - and probably
not a good drink.

You can check out the pages on this site that offers wines from
several/many sellers in the UK (also ports, sherries, whiskeys, and
other destilled products.
You should see the 1966 selections if you copy and insert this link:
http://www.wine-searcher.com/find//1966/UK/GBP/A/1?ID=PV7TB6B0PTZ0019

1966 vintage port, sherry, cognac, whiskey, calvados (an apple
destillate) are probably all still too pricey, but they are much, much
more likely still to be good, and also have the advantage that once
opened, they do not have to be finished in a couple of days and can be
enjoyed in small portions for a long time.
An old wine should really be drunk within a couple of hours after
opening the bottle, but no one can guarantee that it will actually
still be good.

Sorry not to be able to help you with more positive information.

Hi !! I'm french (very good wine ...) and i suggest you to visit this :
http://search.ebay.fr/search/search.dll?sofocus=bs&sbrftog=1&from=R10&satitle=1966+&sacat=99%26catref%3DC6&sargn=-1%26saslc%3D3&sadis=200&fpos=75015&ga10244=10425&saslt=2&ftrt=1&ftrv=1&saprclo=&saprchi=&fsop=1%26fsoo%3D1&coaction=compare&copagenum=1&coentrypage=search&fgtp=

In ebay, you can find cery good wine for less than 50 £. But france is
far !! So, ask at a friend or a man for send you the wine. I think
you can find a real good business !!

But, i think you can more easyly find a bottle in france that in england

Best regards, pokito

Sadly as MyOarin-ga has pointed out, most wines from 1966 will be
pretty horrible, even red wines deteriorate above about 12 years.

Have you considered getting her a newspaper from the date of her birth ?

Last time I looked at Private Eye they were selling them in the classifieds.

1966 was the year that England won the World Cup, they overprinted the
stamps with 'England Winners' - while I doubt that your mother is
remotely interested in football, you could play with the idea.

However, it might not be tactful to remind her of her age, which is
pretty young anyway.

Incidentally, I used to buy my father a bottle of Calvados, but not
specifically dated, a little reminder that it was involved in my
conception.

Greetings Frde,

Fine calvados is a great pleasure, but maybe not the right gift for a
lady's 40th birthday - unless I'm dating her. :-) Sounds like your
Dad might have agreed.

Cheers, Myo aka Ratty
