The August 1, 2000 issue of PC Magazine did a wrapup of notebook

to make these 31 machines the best laptops ever.?

Here are some typical specifications for the ?fast? category:

Gateway Solo 9300xl

Processor: Pentium III/750
LCD: 15.8?
Hard disk: 18.1G
RAM: 128MB
DVD
CD-RW
Modem: V.90
Fast Ethernet
OS: Windows 2000
Price: $4,145

IBM Thinkpad T20

Processor: Pentium III/700
LCD: 13.8?
Hard disk: 11.5G
RAM: 128MB
DVD
CD-RW
Modem: V.90
Fast Ethernet
OS: Windows 2000

All of the PC Magazine editor?s choice computers are linked on this page:

Apple?s Powerbook and at least two models from Compaq, Dell, H-P and
Toshiba also made the list.

Several of the PC magazines have online versions, including the old
issues, though access varies. PC Magazine has issues from August
onwards:

PC Magazine
August-December, 2000

PC World, by contrast, only has subscriber access to online editions ?
so if you wish to use it the best option may be a library?s access to
fee-based services like Infotrac.

I remember back in 2000 high end desktops were at about 800Mhz so my
guess would be about a 400Mhz pentium 2 333 celeron with about 256mb
pc100.. and about a 12gb hard drive.
