The piece is a small oil on board (9h x 6w approx), likely purchased
in Warsaw or Cracow. It shows a horse-drawn, four-wheel, "handsome",
waiting in the snow outside a doorway above which is a large stone
carving (as are common in urban Poland) of a ship. The building,
perhaps, a merchants' guild-house or somesuch. The general effect is
of light browns/golds/whites with the darker black/brown of the horse
and handsome-cab. I appreciate your efforts and will "tip" more if you
can identify conclusively. The American is not ruled out. If of Polish
origin, perhaps the piece was done before he emigrated or, less
likely, during a return visit. Now that I think of it, I have always
assumed that my father brought this from Poland. I emigrated to North
America in 1966. My father lived on in exile in Glasgow (where hung
the painting) until his death in 1982. I'm no longer sure when the
painting appeared on the wall of his sitting room. It could,
conceivably, have been sent or brought to my father as a gift from
Polish family members who had emigrated to USA, like myself to Canada.
