The movie I'm looking for is a psychological drama, shot in black &
white. The subject matter and the way the characters were dressed
lead me to believe it was shot and set in the late 1950's or
early-to-mid 1960's, in the United States.
Most of the film takes place in one car of a passenger train. Two
passengers--a handsome, youngish black man with short hair, wearing a
white shirt and tie, and a young, attractive white woman with blonde
hair, wearing a miniskirt (I think)--are engaged in a conversation
that grows progressively more intense. Alternatively antagonistic and
empathetic, racial, sexual and gender stereotypes are powerfully
thrust out into the open, to the point where physical violence seems
to be inevitable.
That's all I can remember.

Your description sounds like "Dutchman," a 1967 film.

Here are a few plot descriptions:

Is this your movie?

I'm glad to have been able to help you identify your movie! I
recognized it from the description. It has been many years since I saw
"Dutchman," but it made quite an impression on me.

"Dutchman" has been released on DVD and VHS:

Amazon: Dutchman DVD

Amazon: Dutchman VHS
