Question ID: 774729
I am trying to find the total number (market size) of the laser
barcode scanners that are out there (worldwide). These are also
called Point of Sale systems, but I am specifically interested in the
ones that have the laser scanner attached (just like the supermarket).
The referenced answer will help me to build my business case as our
product works with the existing technology (i.e. "...over 50 million
terminals worldwide can already use our technology....")

Thanks

Hello Sscottresearch,

Venture Development Corporation offers an informative report titled
?The Global AIDC Industry Business Planning Service 2005.?

Download the complete report here for detailed data:

Excerpt:

VDC segments the stationary scanner market into four segments

 - Industrial Laser Scanners
 - Industrial Imagers
 - POS Scanners
 - Bar Code Verifiers

In 2004, the global market for these technologies reached
approximately $761 million unit shipments were shipments were slightly
more than 900,000 in 2004.
Stationary scanners are forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth
rate (CAGR) of approximately 7% reaching revenue of $1.1 billion by
2009. Then overall stationary scanner market is projected to
experience nearly 11% annual growth in unit shipments, reaching 1.5
million units by 2009. The majority of growth will occur in the
industrial imager market. VCD anticipates that the emerging imaging
technology will grow roughly 14% per year through 2009. Growth in
imager shipments is expected to outpace that of laser technology, as
declining price points and enhanced performance capabilities position
imaging technology as a viable alternative to laser."

Thanks, this is useful, I wonder though if there is a referenced
"total" number somewhere out there - like " there are close to 50
million POS scanners already in use around the world"...unless you
think it is in that report?

30 million POS systems

"ViVOtech, Santa Clara, Calif., recently unveiled ViVOpay, a
contactless payment terminal developed for use with 30 million POS
systems.
Rather than requiring merchants to purchase new systems, ViVOpay
enables them to easily and cost-efficiently upgrade their current
magnetic-stripe POS to accept payment from contactless cards."

30 million POS terminals worldwide

"Of the more than 30 million POS terminals worldwide, 12 million are
in the U.S., according to The Nilson Report.

Five percent to 7% of installed terminals are replaced each year in
the U.S., Vanchesan says, which means there's plenty of opportunity to
grow sales through updated products and new technology."

"In 2008 an approximate number of 50 million POS terminals will be in
operation worldwide."

I hope this helps!
