What causes one to have a very adverse reaction to alcohol and others do not?

Supposedly it is genetic. If you react badly to alcohol, you are less
likely to become an alcoholic.

Age. 
Gender. 
Race or ethnicity. 
Physical condition (weight, fitness level, etc). 
Amount of food consumed before drinking. 
How quickly the alcohol was consumed. 
Use of drugs or prescription medicines. 
Family history of alcohol problems.

It's also ethnic.  If you react badly to alcohol, you are less likely to be Irish.
