The following 2 quotations are all remember from a poem which appeared
at the beginning of a book as a sort of introduction. I suspect the
poem is by Franz Werfel but I can not recount the name of the book nor
the name of its author.
1) "Kommt wir spielen Teater, spielen unsre eignen Stücke..."
2) "...und ein (*)Hündchen bellt verwundert einen Pfau an." Note: the
(*) indicate that there is one word missing. Could you provide a link
to the whole poem; failing that can you tell me where I can find it?

Dear nosin,

To be exact, the lines you remember are:

"Also spielen wir Theater,
Spielen unsre eignen Stücke"

"Und ein Bologneserhündchen
Bellt verwundert einen Pfau an."

Those lines come from the lyrical prologue Hugo von Hoffmansthal's
wrote for Arthur Schnitzler's drama "Anatol" in 1892. You can read the
complete prologue (together with an English translation) here [1]:

In case you would like to see the prologue as it appeared originally
in print, please follow these links [2]:

I hope this answers your question!
