On the following link is a photo of an engine immobiliser that is
fitted to my car. The dongle on the keyring (photo 1) is pressed onto
the LED by the gear stick (photo 3) and it unlocks the steering and
ignition.

I would like to know the manufacturer so that I can order a spare.
The car was bought in Frankfurt Germany in 2001 and is a 1992 model BWM 325. |

Dear cginsd,
Not an answer yet, but an important comment:
I just asked a German auto mechanic for his opinion. He told me that
it is not possible to determine for certain the manufacturer of the
immobiliser from just looking at the dongle since numerous models and
makes were in use, many looking extremely alike.
He gave me this advice for you: Look behind the console where the
contact is installed. There must be a cable leading sooner or later to
an electronic control box. The box will usually show the name of the
manufacturer, and probably even a serial number. In that case, I can
find contact information for the manufacturer for you.
I hope to hear from you!

Hmmm... I was hoping to get a simple answer without taking my dashboard apart.
I guess I have half an answer to that one already. I'll get into the
guts of the car when I get a chance, but it may not be in the next few
days as I am in it on the road on business.

Hi Scriptor,
Sorry to say I had a go, but taking enough of the car's interior apart
to find the box in question is beyond me. I'd like to throw this out
there as originally asked and see if anyone can identify the system
from the dongle and the LED. At least if I can narrow it down to a
couple of possibilities I can ping them all for my VIN.
If the question remains unanswered for 2 weeks, I propose paying you
$25 for saying it is impossible up front.
Sound OK?

This is very generous. I wish I could do more for you; but I asked the
mechanic again, and he said that the chance to find out the make and
model of the device from looking at the exterior is zero. But I do
appreciate your suggestion very much!
Best regards,

Bit more than a couple of weeks - sorry got busy - but I think I owe
you $25. Any idea how I can change the list price?

Hello!
Unfortunately, changing the price is not possible for technical
reasons. But you can expire this question (or just let it expire
automatically which will happen very soon) and post a new one, titled
"For Scriptor-ga only". That is the easiest way.
All the best,
