Question ID: 775809
I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Symantec Antivirus 10. I
was successfully running Cisco VPN client 3.63 and attempted to
upgrade to 4.8. The upgrade package reported that it was uninstalling
previous client. It then reported that system must be rebooted after
which install would complete automatically. After reboot, nothing
happened for a while. I then manually re-ran installation package and
it appeared to run normally and complete. However, no files were
installed in the Program Files\Cisco directory! I followed the Cisco
instructions for manual uninstall of the VPN client (removing registry
entries and some system files) and attempted re-install with same
results. I attempted re-install of old client 3.63 with same results.
I uninstalled Symantec Antivirus and attempted re-install of Cisco
client 4.8 with same results. How can I successfully install the
Cisco VPN client, either version?

The solution was to use the MSI installer instead of the InstallShield
installer. It was actually that simple. We never found out what the
problem was with the InstallShield version.
