What is the size of a typical block in New Orleans' Vieux Carre? This
would be from building face at one corner to the building face at the
next, ie do not include sidewalks or streets. The blocks are roughly
square, so the answer will be one dimension such as 320 feet.
Thanks

Hello and thanks for your question.

The Vieux Carre Commission (VCC) has been most helpful in locating the
answer to your question. Their website can be found at:
http://www.new-orleans.la.us/cnoweb/vcc/

According to one of the architects at the commission, there is some
variety to the size of the blocks in the Vieux Carre however about 60%
of them are 310 to 320 feet parallel to the river and about 320 to 330
feet parallel to Canal Street and Esplanade Avenue.

Any of the blocks between Decatur Street and the river are not
square-shaped and their dimensions vary considerably. Also, the blocks
between Esplanade Avenue and Barracks Street are all only around 200
to 210 feet long parallel to the river.

If you have more specific questions (viz. a question about the exact
size of a particular block) the VCC would be able to provide you with
that information and their contact information is located on their
website.

I have found a number of maps of the Vieux Carre online that might be
of help to you. These maps contain a scale that will help to give you
the dimensions of particular blocks:

Here is a map on which you can click on a specific blocks in order to
obtain a detailed account of the buildings on that block (also from
the Vieux Carre Commission):

An old map of the Vieux Carre from the Library of Congress can be
found at:
http://www.cr.nps.gov/nr/twhp/wwwlps/lessons/20VIEUX/20locate3.htm

Here is another map from www.guidesulysse.com

Search strategy:
"Vieux Carre" map
"Vieux Carre" block size
"Vieux Carre Commission"

Best luck with your search!
