I am a British citizen with an undergraduate degree (Psychology) from
a British University. I would like to do a one year Masters course
either on a Psychology or Media topic at an English speaking
University in any interesting country around the world (I am
particularly drawn to a Middle Eastern or Arabic county). I am looking
for a University where my International student tuition fees would be
in the region of 1 - 2000 Pounds GB Sterling for the year and has a
relatively low cost of living. I am looking for the names of these
Universities and any example figures for the tuition costs / typical
costs of living. Many thanks!

Dear camsamba-ga,

I recommend that you look for universities in Egypt. First of all
contrary to other peoples beliefs Egypt is a very safe country to live
in.
As an Egyptian myself I can assure you the Egyptian people are very
welcoming hospitable and sincere.
As for money matters Egypt is a very affordable country. Tuition fees
vary considerably from one university to the other but I would imagine
that it would not surpass your budget as it is likely if you choose to
go to the UAE or many other Arab countries.
Housing, pocket money and day to day expenses are really nothing
compared to the UK. And the exchange rate for money would be really in
your favor.
1 GPB = 11 EGP at the moment.
I will provide an estimate of the costs of everyday life.

Meal from McDonalds = 1.5 to 2 GPB
Bottle of mineral water = 10p
Pack of Marlboro = (cigarettes that is) 75p
Bottle of coke 2 liters =30 p
Liter of gasoline= 1.3 p
Dinner for 2 @ Fridays, or a nice Italian restaurant for example= 20 GPB.

As for list of universities in Egypt:
Just go to this wiki link and they are all listed, however they not all of them
Offer post graduate degrees

as for my recommendation you should consider the American university
in Cairo (AUC) as it is one of the best and has a very good reputation
as well as I being very central (downtown Cairo)

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Mohamed

Thanks mtalkhan-ga, Egypt was a place I was very much considering and
the American University itself. It would fit some of my criteria - the
location, taught language and cost of living - but from what I've seen
the tuition fees would be well out of my price range. Incidently, you
may be interested to know that I have had several friends who have had
great times in Egypt and am now planning to go over early next year to
do a TEFL course in Alexandria.

Thanks also foreseer-ga. Believe me I have tried searching it on the
net (your comment could well be attached to every question on google
answers!) but have yet to find a satisfactory answer, leading me to
well believe it might not exist! I appreciate the amount I offered is
very low for what could well turn out to be a wild goose chase taking
several hours, but was, I guess, hoping to attract someone who knew of
someplace already, keen to either earn a quick ten bucks or, like
mtalkhan-ga, just help out.

Any other comments very welcome!

Cheers,

Sam

2000 GBP a year = about $320 a month, or about $10 a day, including
tuition, rent, living.

I find it hard to believe that such a thing exists, given the fact
that most English-language programmes in the Middle East are in
private universities. That excludes the two most prestigious American
universities, in Beirut and in Cairo.

Furthermore, this means that in general, there are really very few
countries where this could happen, perhaps very poor countries with
English-language academic system like Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe,
Namibia and some other countries in Africa. But then again, the very
low stadard of living there also applies for such things you as a
Westerner taker for granted, such as running water, in house bathroom,
medical care at a Western level, etc.

What is exactly your goal in doing this? People do Masters' degrees
because they want to specialise in something; or because they "have
to" in order to get a job. From your lack of specification (either
psychology or media studies, not exactly related fields), I guess that
you don't belong to the first group. Regarding the latter, I must
admit, that if I was at a doctoral admitance committee or a
job-interviewer, I'd be a bit sceptical about someone who chose to do
their degree at less-than-prestigious universities, in coutries which
are not famous for academic freedom or freedom of speech in general.

If your goal is to have a bit of an "experience" in the Middle East,
and the university is only a way to get there, consider getting a job
that would allow you to get there without spending the year at
university, e.g., TESL.

Thanks politicalguru-ga,

I think your answer pretty much sums up where my thoughts were heading.

As for my lack of 'specificiation', it was genuinely because I enjoy
Psychology and Media and enjoy studying both, at any level.

I also take on board your points about living standards etc., while I
may have 'experienced' these on previous travels, it's hardly the same
as living in a place.

TEFL was also very much on my mind and is likely to be what I now
decide to do. My original plan was, I think, a mis-match of different
things I had wanted to do.

Anyway thanks for all your help - just clarifying what I wanted to do
as much as anything. Plus it didn't even cost me a tenner!

Best wishes,

CamSamba
