I am looking for a book published as a paperback that I read in about
the 1980's, possibly early 1990's and it may have been republished
from an earlier date. It was small 100 to 200 page book. It discussed
back problems as a result of bad modern habits, that people in tribal
societies did not have spine problems, according to the book. It had a
few dozen black and white sketches of bad posture showing posture
tilted to lift or right, one shoulder higher than the other, etc., to
guide an individual in a correct exercise program. It may be related
to a book by Robin McKenzie "Treat Your Own Back".

Hello, ricky500!
I don't know that I can find this exact book title for you in an
efficient search. Many older books have no visual online descriptions
and a researcher could spend hours searching in a fruitless effort.
However, I have studied postural abnormalities in quite a bit of
depth, and I know of several books - as well as online resources-
which depict the types of irregularities you describe (tilted
shoulder, twisted torso, etc) in relation to back pain (and other pain
syndromes) which would be quite helpful in guiding you in an exercise
program. Would you be interested in these alternative titles as an
answer?

This book was written in the timeframe you describe, but there is no
way to look inside:

The Back Pain Book: A Self-Help Guide for Daily Relief of Neck & Back
Pain (Paperback) by Mike Hage (published 1992)
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1561450421/spinehealth

"Mike Hage shows you how to analyze your patterns of standing,
bending, breathing.."

==

Here is one example of a more recent book along the lines I suggested.
Would similar books and online resources like this be of interest?

"Posture Alignment," by Paul D'Arezzo

Hi ricky500,

I'm hopeful that your book can be found but as many details as you can
remember about the book would increase the chances. For example:

1) Can you remember the colour of the cover? Illustration? Photo?
2) By "sketches" do you mean line drawings?
3) Are the sketches within the text or are they on their own page?
4) Are there also photographs? If so, in colour? Full-page?
5) Are there also illustrations of exercises? Sketches or photos?
6) Does it include an exercise regime?
7) Is it definitely a contemporary publication or could it be a
reprint of a book from an older era (say, '30s or '40s)?
8) Is it aimed at everyone or just women? Men? Children?
9) Any feeling of the gender of the author? More than one author?
10) How tall is the book? 8 inches? Mass-market paperback?
11) How significant is the theory about bad modern habits causing bad
backs? In other words, is it a practical, self-help guide or more a
discussion of theory?
12) Orientation? (e.g., North American medical, holistic, yoga,
breathing, sports, occupational)
13) Can you think of anything else? Don't be afraid of telling us too
much, this is one time you can just blather on, the more the better!

Will look forward to your reply,
hummer

Hi ricky500,

Thank you for your clarification. I will review your additional
information and get back to you.

The Imrie book is available in paperback but I'll have to search more for a photo.

Goodbye Backache
Format: Paperback
"Synopsis: Discusses the causes of backache, describes methods for
relieving pain in the back, and recommends exercises designed to
develop a strong healthy back"
http://ostg.pricegrabber.com/search_fullinfobk.php/isbn=0668058900

I'll also see if I can find a photo of the Steinman book but it
appears to be available only as a trade paperback (larger format) and
not a mass market paperback.

Please respond to umiat-ga regarding the Mike Hage book.

Till later,
hummer

Hello ricky500,

The philosophy you describe (that people today have developed bad
habits and cause themselves pain as a result) is called the Alexander
Technique. There are a number of books written on the subject and
looking for books simply on "back pain" is not going to find them
because they're not categorized under that. Here are some books on
the Alexander Technique that are early '90s or '80s-published books.

"The Alexander Technique: How to Use Your Body without Stress
(Paperback)" by Wilfred Barlow
http://www.amazon.com/Alexander-Technique-Your-without-Stress/dp/0892813857/sr=8-3/qid=1161874547/ref=sr_1_3/104-8537115-7211146?ie=UTF8&s=books

"Fitness Without Stress: A Guide to the Alexander Technique
(Hardcover)" by Robert M. Rickover
(it also has come out in paperback, so it might have a different cover
than that one... read the reviews and see if it matches what you read)
http://www.amazon.com/Fitness-Without-Stress-Alexander-Technique/dp/0943920329/sr=8-1/qid=1161874547/ref=pd_bbs_1/104-8537115-7211146?ie=UTF8&s=books
Paperback:

"Your Guide to the Alexander Technique (Paperback)" by John Gray

"Awareness Through Movement: Easy-to-Do Health Exercises to Improve
Your Posture, Vision, Imagination, and Personal Awareness (Paperback)"
by Moshe Feldenkrais

"The Alexander Technique As I See It (Paperback)"
by Patrick Macdonald

These are from a little later but I include them just in case:

"The Alexander Technique Manual: A Step-By-Step Guide to Improve
Breathing, Posture and Well-Being (Paperback)" by Richard Brennan
http://www.amazon.com/Alexander-Technique-Manual-Breathing-Well-Being/dp/1885203381/sr=8-7/qid=1161874960/ref=pd_bbs_7/104-8537115-7211146?ie=UTF8&s=books

"Body Learning: An Introduction to the Alexander Technique
(Paperback)" by Michael Gelb
http://www.amazon.com/Body-Learning-Introduction-Alexander-Technique/dp/0805042067/sr=8-3/qid=1161874960/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3/104-8537115-7211146?ie=UTF8&s=books

"The Complete Illustrated Guide to the Alexander Technique: A
Practical Program for Health, Poise, and Fitness (Complete Illustrated
Guide S.) (Paperback)" by Glynn McDonald
http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Illustrated-Guide-Alexander-Technique/dp/1862042268/sr=8-11/qid=1161874960/ref=pd_bbs_sr_11/104-8537115-7211146?ie=UTF8&s=books

"The Alexander Technique in Everyday Life (Paperback)"
by Jonathan Drake
http://www.amazon.com/Alexander-Technique-Everyday-Life/dp/0722532903/sr=8-30/qid=1161875315/ref=sr_1_30/104-8537115-7211146?ie=UTF8&s=books

Finally, this one does not have a cover shown but is from the right time period:
http://www.amazon.com/Alexander-Technique-Alternative-Health-Stevens/dp/0804830061/sr=8-47/qid=1161875437/ref=sr_1_47/104-8537115-7211146?ie=UTF8&s=books

Same for this one (from the '70s) which was written by the technique's founder.

Let me know if this leads you anywhere.

Hello, ricky,
You sure have a lot of suggestions, here. I will stand by my original
clarification that in lieu of the exact title you remember, there are
several very good resources I know of that work with specific
exercises for postural abnormalities that produce back pain and other
syndromes. If you would like me to offer these as an alternative
answer to your question, let me know. Otherwise, I will sit tight. The
book by Mike Hage I suggested is sort of an elementary introduction to
a more serious approach. The Alexander technique, as described by
Keystroke, is a different approach than those I am speaking of. As
mentioned before, I can direct you to some books and online resources
that can help you with some very good exercise guidelines related to
posture.
