Call me lucky but I have recently been awarded a share of $60 million. True!

Call me lucky again because I have no need for any further worldly
wealth so this latest windfall is actually an embarrassment because,
frankly, I have no idea what to do with it.

However, I feel sure that the inhabitants of this GA-laxy (who are
more imaginative than me) will be able to help me, as always.

I have already decided NOT to make any 'loans' to any political
parties because of the risks involved but I might consider making some
exceptions (eg a face lift for John Prescott, or a shave for Saddam
Hussein).

In case it helps, my share (already credited to my account) is £0.57
... That's Pound Sterling.

Many Thanks

Bryan

Embarrassed by Riches...

According to the Google calculator, UK£ 0.57 = 1.070004 U.S. dollars

I would therefore suggest a modest approach to philanthropy, such as
those suggested by the Center Digit blog:

A hundred bucks dot com:

"This site is dedicated to anonymous, person-to-person, grassroots
philanthropy. Here you will find stories from people who have given
a hundred bucks to another person in an anonymous act of philanthropy."
http://ahundredbucks.com/ahb/

DonorsChoose.org:

"DonorsChoose is a simple way to provide students in need with resources
that our public schools often lack."
http://donorschoose.org/

ModestNeeds.org:

"Modest Needs is a registered charity that works to stop the cycle
of poverty before it starts for low-income workers struggling to
afford emergency expenses like those we've all encountered before:
the unexpected auto repair, the unanticipated trip to the doctor,
the unusually large winter heating bill."

Hi Bryan.

This is actually a suggestion based on personal experience because I
am a handicap myself. And being able to work on the internet for
services like Google Answers is indeed a blessing!

Hi Easterangel

Great suggestion, please post an answer forthwith.

At least I can donate my share of the $60 million to a worthy GAR.

All the Best

Bryan

Hi Bryan.

Thanks for letting me post this as an answer.

How about creating an organization for handicap people around the
world wherein they will be provided with computers plus internet
access for free. They will be supplied with teachers on how to
effectively use such technology so they can find their talents and
thereby earn while on the net at the comfort of their own homes.
Everything will be done in the home.

Going outside and leaving your home is such a pain for handicap people.

Many thanks, Easterangel

That is a truly marvellous idea and it makes me wish that my share of
the $60 million is not enough to fund it.

All the Very Best

Bryan

Wonderful idea from Easterangel, and quite seriously, I also think
that education and Internet access could solve many problems. A fund
that would help to train engineers, physicians, teachers and social
scientitists in the Third World; education to women and Internet
access through proxies in the Islamic world; etc.

By the way, I've recently heard a story which discussed how better it
is to donate to an already existing charity (providing that you check
their management and accounting). It gave the example of the Baldwin
brothers, who founded a fund in memory of their mother, to research
breast cancer. Most of the money went to administration, in contrast
to another celebrity, who donated her money to an already existing
charity, which was more practical/useful.

And on the light side, it is all but natural that now you'd ask $200
questions, every day, and tip us with disgusting amounts of money!

[You can also adopt an orphan from Malawi. A GA-celebrity like you
could probably get one half-priced! <--- just in case there are reader
without a sense of humour: this is a joke]

I must admit from personal experience that easterangel?s suggestion is
one which I would support. As a disabled person unable to work in the
normal work environment, I have found that access to a computer and
the internet has saved my sanity and helped me overcome the physical
and mental challenge of reducing mobility. Millions of people are
stuck at home with little options. Most have only access to
television, and one can only read books for a few hours. Many of them
have little contact with the outside world, and lack of interaction
and communication with other people can create mental problems.

The provision of computers and the internet would do much for their
lives, and give them a chance not miss out on the digital world and
its benefits. otherwise they will become even further removed.

How about offering more than $2.01 for an answer :-)

Thanks Bryan.

For starters, you and other very wealthy individuals might want to
look at the One Laptop Per Child or the $100+ Laptop. Inexpensive but
will do the trick for most third world countries like the Philippines.

Thanks for the very generous tip, the very kind words and 5 stars.

On second thoughts, rather than squander it now, invest in a prudent
and safe company and let it accumulate. With luck, and the wonder of
compound interest, your great-grandchildren will be able to squabble
over a magnificent £193 or so

Great idea, easterangel. You should make an application to the Gates
Foundation and see if they'll fund it... they just might.

Hi keystroke.

I have had this idea for months now and even made a short blog about this as well.

Thanks.

Well, easterangel, now is a great time to do that, I guess :)
