goes to a school where there is a child in the class for every letter

Just a guess:

"The Story of Zachary Zween"

"A to Z, that was the rule of this particular London school..." So
starts the story of poor Zachary Zween who is always last in
everything; but he learns that--sometimes--good things come last!
Excellent rhythm and rhyme makes this book a good "read-out-loud"
classic!

Ragged Robin: Poems from a to Z
Reeves, James

"...Quirky characters and friendly beasts inhabit the pages of this
inviting, delightful poetry book. The poems regale the letters of the
alphabet, from King Arthur in Avalon, through moths and moonshine, to
Zachary Zed..."

Although the above book was published in 1990

I also found this reference:

"Zed vs Zee

Also like the English, Canadians refer to the last letter of the
alphabet as Zed. (Even though "zee" does work better in the context
of singing The Alphabet Song.) I remember a story we had to read in
Grade One about a kid named Zachary who didn't like his name because
all the kids used to tease him by chanting "Zachary Zed... go to bed!"
I presume this story was never heard in the US?"
