Greetings tick,

The National Weather Service for the state of Massachusetts maintains
the data that you are wanting to collect. After visiting their
website, I was able to find the monthly snowfall totals for Worcester
specifically, between the years of 1892 to 2000. This graph shows each
month and the number of total inches received, however it does not
contain every specific date in which there were 2" or more.

They have other graphs available such as seasonal snowfall statistics
(1920-1996), daily snowfall/precipitation records for each month
(1892-2002). They even have an interesting "Boston Weather History"
page that shows major weather events that occurred over the past
century along with the dates (major snowstorms, etc). Other options
include snowfall totals, precip totals, daily normals and daily
records.

I've provided links below to the National Weather Service office
website run out of Boston. You can find all of the data mentioned
above and several more breakdowns that might be able to give you all
the data you need. The National Weather Service is most likely the
only resource that is going to have the data you're requesting,
especially going back that far and for a specific town. If you can't
find what you're looking for on their website, I highly recommend
contacting the Boston office and see if they have the records you
need. I'm sure they would provide them to you at no charge. Otherwise,
your only other option would be the town hall records in Worcester,
but that could turn into a pretty hefty research project.

I hope that helps to answer your question. Please don't hesitate to
ask for clarification if you need any additional assistance -- I'll be
more than happy to help further.

Sincerely,
PWizard

Hi Tick,

The data you're looking for IS actually available online, but not in
an easy to access format. If you're willing to look at the data
yourself (i.e. find the days where more than 2 inches of snow are
listed), you might be interested in downloading the daily surface data
files from the National Climactic Data Center, which claims to be "the
world's largest active archive of weather data".
http://lwf.ncdc.noaa.gov/oa/ncdc.html

In looking through their site, I found that there were several weather
stations collecting data for the Worcester area, dating back to 1926.
Of the 5 or 6 in the area, these two cover the date range you're
looking for:

COOP ID WBAN ID Station Name State Period of Record
(mm/yyyy)
199928 WORCESTER MA 01/1926 to 10/1962
199923 94746 WORCHESTER REGIONAL ARPT MA 06/1948 to 06/2002

While the NNDC allows you to search for the information in various
ways (including by city or zip code), you can use the COOP ID nummbers
199928 and 199923 to shortcut the following rather laboreous search
process:

From the starting page above or http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/ ...
Click the "Weather Station/City" link
Select the "Cooperative Station ID" radio button,
Next type in one of the coop numbers, ( 199928 or 199923 )
click the Search button,
then scroll down the resulting page and click the "SOD Daily Surface
Data" link,
choose Advanced,
select "SNOW Daily Snowfall"
Enter the date range of interest for this station and any other
options you may want for formatting.

You'll then be prompted for your email address. A few minutes later,
you'll get an email from the NCDC with web links that lead to the data
files you requested. Note that you'll need to do this for both of the
stations mentioned to cover the date range you're interested in.

The resulting text files can be opened and reviewed to allow you to
locate those days of extra heavy snowfall. (Excel or other spreadsheet
software can make this easier).

If you are unable or unwilling to download and search the files
yourself, the data can probably be purchsed on CD-ROM from the NCDC.
You can check their products section and contact pages for more
details and options.

Here's there main contact info for starters:
National Climatic Data Center
Federal Building
151 Patton Avenue
Asheville NC 28801-5001

Hope this helps!
