I use Entourage on my MAC and Outlook on my PC. All too often I
incorrectly type an email address and send it. The email is usually
returned and I correct the mistake. The problem is that the incorrect
address is indelibly etched into the data base and keeps showing up as
an option as I begin typing the address again. I want to delete the
bad address that is in memory. How do I do it on the MAC and on the
PC.

Thanks

whk...

I'm thinking you're talking about using autocomplete when
you start typing a name in the To: field. In both cases,
I believe you'll need to open your address book and locate
the incorrect entry in order to delete it. Once it's gone
from your address book, it shouldn't show up in autocomplete.

Let me know where this takes you...

Thanks for the request for clarification.

The way I see the problem, it is unrelated to the address book. What
happens is I begin to type an address and the software gives me all
the choices for the letters I have typed. The choices narrow as I
type further. The problem is that the email addresses with typos in
them are included in the choices and I can't remember which is the
correct one and which is incorrct. I just want to be able to delete
the bad ones so I don't get confused. The address book is totally
separate. Thanks

Try this and let me know if it solves your problem:

For Outlook:

When the Auto Complete list shows up when you are trying to compose a
new E-mail, use the up or down button on your keyboard to choose which
E-mail address you want to delete from the Auto Complete list.

To remove the E-mail address that you want to delete just hit the
Delete Key on the keyboard and it will delete the highlighted E-mail
address.

To turn off the auto complete feature in Outlook:
1. Click "Tools", selecting "Options".
2. When the "Options" multi-tabbed dialog box appears, click the "Preferences" tab.
3. Click "E-Mail Options".
4. When the "Advanced E-Mail Options" dialog appears, uncheck "Suggest
names while completing To, CC, and Bcc fields".
5. Click "OK" to close the dialog box.

For Entourage:

You can clear the address cache by going to Preferences -> Compose and
clicking on the button on the bottom of that pane labeled "Clear
List".

If you want to disable this feature entirely and have Entourage only
offer auto-complete for addresses in your address book, simply uncheck
the option "Display a list of recently used addresses when address
messages".

Looking forward to your clarification.

Rainbow

Your solution works on Outlook. I'll try it on the MAC for Entourage.
 Thanks. You helped me.

Outlook on the PC worked great. Entourage on the MAC only allows me
to delete everything, not individual addresses as I want to do. If
there is a way to delete typo addresses, I'd like to know about it. I
don't, however, want to delete all of my address memory.

Thanks.

The following are the results of my additional research:

"Note: If you click to clear the Display a list of recently used
addresses when addressing messages check box, Entourage still displays
a list of suggested addresses from the address book.

"Advanced tip: if you want to just get rid of one particular email
message, add that address to your Address Book, then delete the new
entry. That should clear it out."

This should post in a thread answer your question:
"You can't edit the list directly. Entourage stores a cache of and
remembers names and email addresses from every email that you've
either sent out or received or from your contacts list in Entourage.
This is where your names are coming from.

If you go under "Mail & News Preferences" and then click the "Compose"
tab, you'll see that the very last checkbox on the pane allows you to
turn this list on or off... it's entitled, "Display a list of recently
used addresses when addressing messages". If it's checked, you'll see
a list of names pop up when you start typing something in the "To:"
field. If you un-check it, that list of names won't automatically
appear.

The only kind of editing you can do to this list is clear it
completely, by clicking the "Clear List" button under the checkbox.
You can't add or subtract names from this list one by one."

I hope this helps.

Rainbow
