I'd say the answer, in a nutshell, is guns and gold. The Europeans were technologically sophisticated, which gave them the means to travel the globe and the weapons to overwhelm native populations in the Americas, Africa, and Asia. And they had the lust for gold, which they amassed in prodigious quantities (especially from the New World) and built the wealth to support continuing their exploits. That's my 2 cents worth of a summary. |
