I heard a story about a couple kids in the U.S. (possibly in
Washington state) who killed their parents and then, as punishment,
were exiled to an island instead of being kept in juvenile prison. I
would like to find more information about this.

Hi.

I believe that I've located information about this case. However, the
facts differ somewhat from what you remember. The two juveniles were
indeed exiled to an island, but the victim of their crime was not a
parent. Are you still interested?

The case that you're referring to is undoubtedly that of two minors,
who happened to be native Americans exiled to an Alaskan island. As
the Seattle Times noted in Oct. 1994,
" An Everett judge referred the case to the tribal court in Klawock
but retained the right to sentence the boys to prison should the
experiment fail. It marked the first time a criminal case had been
referred by a state court to a tribal panel."

The pair were Adrian Guthrie and Simon Roberts, two 17-year-old Alaska
natives, who were sentenced for beating a pizza deliveryman. On Jul
13, 1994 Judge James Allendoerfer of Superior Court in Everett WA
(Snohomish County) agreed to a request by defense lawyers to turn the
boys over to elders of the Thlawaa Tlingit Nation in Alaska. A tribal
judge said sentencing would follow a hearing in August before tribal
judges.

The Snohomish County judge retained legal control over the
proceedings, and indicated that he retained the right to sentence the
two to jail if the outcome was not favorable.

You won't find these referenced on the Internet, as the archives of
Seattle area newspapers start after that. The New York Times archive
contains some news stories about the incident.

I took a run at your question, but found nothing of interest. But, the
more I thought about it, the more I wondered where any judge in the
United States would find the legal authority to exile someone. It just
doesn't seem likely to have happened quite as described. Perhaps there
are some more details that can be remembered by fickerra-ga.

I'll be watching this question to see if others can find something.

you might want to also try running searches on alternative spellings
of tlingit. "tlinkit, tlingit, klinkit, klingkit, klingit...". i
remembered it as klingit...

anyhow, i think the answer is right on about the boys being from
everett. i remember reading the pieces about it in the newspapers. i
dont live in washington state, so either i read about it in a
californian newspaper or i read it online (i do read nyt online).

good luck with your search.
