Hello, johanallers-ga!
Africa is a huge continent filled with a diverse array of countries.
To come up with a few names for you would be quite an undertaking.
I think your best bet is to look through the Contemporary Africa
Database. You can look through hundreds of profiles of prominent,
contemporary Africans by specific niche - Politics, Education, Sports,
etc.
"The Africa Centre's Contemporary Africa Database Project is a new and
challenging project on the World Wide Web, funded by the Rockefeller
Foundation. Its aim is to provide much-needed information, on African
people, organisations and history, on one easily accessible site. Each
person in the database has a page of his or her own. This may contain
information on positions they have held, works they have produced,
achievements in their lifetime or links to other sites. There may also
be profiles of the person, which as they are submitted from various
sources, do not necessarily reflect the views of the Africa Centre. In
CAD People, you are presented with the options of browsing by
professional category, by country or by first letter of the family
name. You can also browse through a combination of all three."

I think this is the best resource you will find for contemporary
African leaders who might be available for your symposium.
