Hello Plumeria62,
The name of the song is Twilight and Mist, music by James Horner and
lyrics by Brock Walsh
The Lyrics
"As evening fell, a maiden stood
At the edge of a wood.
In her hands lay the reins
Of a stallion.
And ne'er I'd seen a girl as fair,
Heard a gentler voice anywhere.
Whispered, "Alas..."
She belonged, belonged to another--
Another forever.
Yes, she belonged to
the twilight and mist."

?The cue "The Ludlows" is the best demonstration of the different
themes in the score. It opens with a piano rendition of the song
"Twilight and Mist" - in the song sung by Samuel (this theme is later
used to symbolize him) - performed by Horner

The Song: Twilight and Mist
?I've received countless requests on various types of information
concerning the song "Twilight and Mist" from Legends of the Fall. In
the film, it is played on piano by Julia Ormond (Susannah) and sung by
Henry Thomas (Samuel). On the soundtrack album, it is found at the
beginning of the second track, "The Ludlows," in piano only. Though
many have presumed that the solo piano was played by Horner himself,
it is Randy Kerber's eloquent playing that graces this recording. This
has been confirmed by sources in the industry who work with Mr. Kerber
on a professional basis.
