Hi,
The best way to find out what the AMA thinks about various plans for
health care is to look at what the AMA itself says. The medical
organization has a long list of articles about its positions on the
following page:
Health Insurance Reform
http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/category/3373.html
If you read through the articles linked, you will find that the
organization emphasizes several reasons for supporting its proposal in
preference to some of the other proposals that would require more
extensive government involvement. Among them are:
-- Patients should be rewarded for using the health-care system in a
cost-effective way.
-- Patients should have freedom of choice.
-- The system should provide for true competition.
-- Giving employers and employees wider choices would result in care
that best meets the needs of patients.
Of course, you can't expect the AMA to emphasize its self-serving
reasons for taking the positions it does. Among them are:
-- Extensive government regulation could reduce how much doctors earn.
-- Extensive government involvement could make it more difficult for
doctors to select their patients.
-- A single health-care plan could make it more difficult for doctors
to pursue higher-paying specialties.
-- Having a single-payer system could mean that bureaucrats would be
second-guessing doctors more often.
Keep in mind, of course, that the AMA doesn't represent all doctors,
and you'll find doctors on various sides of the health-policy debate.
An excellent overview of the issues relating to health care can be
found on the following site:
Almanac of Policy Issues: Universal Health Care Coverage

I hope this helps.
Sincerely,

search strategy: I went straight to the AMA site and followed links to
its policy pages. I found the other site using the Google search term
of "universal health care" without the quotes.
