I thought there would be more information around for this. All I can find is this table: http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/data_cube_table_page.jsp?data_theme=T_VITAL&data_cube=N_DEATH_TOT&u_id=10001043&c_id=&add=Y Here it is in a graph: http://www.visionofbritain.org.uk/data_cube_chart_page.jsp?data_theme=T_VITAL&data_cube=N_DEATH_TOT&u_id=10001043&c_id=&add=Y From this the average seems to be 500,000(at least from 1871 to 1954. The only other site i could get anything useful from is here: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?ID=952. You would have to know the population for each year however.
