artdonovan-ga,
I have a list of about 700 of the world's largest cities (both US and
non-US) with city, population, lat/long and country.
The list covers all cities with populations of 500,000 or more, so
isn't quite everything you're after, but pretty close.
The listings, in spreadsheet format, look like this:
Shanghai 15,017,783 31.23°N 121.47°E China
Bombay 12,883,645 18.96°N 72.82°E India
Karachi 11,969,284 24.86°N 67.01°E Pakistan
Buenos Aires 11,595,183 34.61°S 58.37°W Argentina
Delhi 11,215,130 28.67°N 77.21°E India
Manila 10,546,511 14.62°N 120.97°E Philippines
Moscow 10,472,629 55.75°N 37.62°E Russia
Seoul 10,409,345 37.56°N 126.99°E Korea (South)
São Paulo 10,059,502 23.53°S 46.63°W Brazil
Istanbul 10,034,830 41.10°N 29.00°E Turkey
Lagos 9,020,089 6.45°N 3.47°E Nigeria
Mexico City 8,659,409 19.43°N 99.14°W Mexico
Jakarta 8,556,798 6.18°S 106.83°E Indonesia
Tokyo 8,372,440 35.67°N 139.77°E Japan
New York 8,124,427 40.67°N 73.94°W United States
[the above table may not stay formatted after posting....sorry!]
In my experience, the free lists available for world cities tend to be
huge databases with hundreds of thousands of entries -- more than my
poor PC can handle.
For instance, the free download at World Gazetteer:
http://www.world-gazetteer.com/wg.php?x=1129163518&men=stdl&lng=en&gln=xx&dat=32&srt=npan&col=aohdq
has just what you need, but the dataset is several hundred thousand
entries in length...too large for an Excel file to handle.
Anyway, let me know if the 700+ cities I have available is of interest to you.
