Hi!!

Your antivirus probably have detected traces of the Rasmin Trojan aka
net.666 aka Explore666. McAfee have detected and handled it for a long
time. If you scanned your PC with the antivirus and it didn't find it,
you probably don't have it. The message you saw doesn't always mean
you are infected.

To ensure that, I suggest you to do a couple of things, some online
scans that will tell you if you have this pest or even if you are
infected with other one:
"Trend Micro HouseCall":
Just click the "Scan Now. It's Free!" link and follow the
instructions. After the scan is done let it remove what it have found.
http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp

"ewido - anti-spyware and anti-malware solutions":
Wait for the program to load (signature db and applet), it take some
time. Again follow the indications and let the application do its job.
http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/

You can also try the TrendMicro AntiSpyware online scanner:
"Trend Micro? Anti-Spyware for the Web - Free Online Spyware Scan":
http://www.trendmicro.com/spyware-scan/free_spyware_scan.asp

One more thing I need you to do to complete this answer: download and
intall HijackThis ans post a log here, I will analyze such log and
tell you if you need to do something else. Do this after the above
tasks are done.

Download and run the following HijackThis (HJT) autoinstall program.
HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't
deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring
your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
http://thespykiller.co.uk/files/HJTsetup.exe

Hijackthis is an expert's tool used to remove hijackers and spyware,
but since it works on demand, not automatically, you only need to post
a log here as a clarification request and then I will analyze it and
tell you what are the next steps.
To see how to get and post a log here see the following tutorial at
BleepingComputer.com; you will only need to post the log without
fixing anything, I will tell you which items must be selected to fix:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtutorial=42#HowToUse

Note that on Windows NT, 2000, & XP, it requires that you have
administrator privileges.

Please post the scan log from HijackThis' scan, WITHOUT fixing
anything, and after I analyze it I will tell you what things must be
fixed with HJT. Also let me know what happened with the online scans.
Probably other procedures and products could be necessary to complete
the cleaning (if any clean is necessary).

It could be helpful if you can tell me what mvtx errors.txt file have
related to this.

Regarding the Rasmin Trojan this is the available info I found:
"W32/Semisoft.58368d":
http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_99264.htm

"Semisoft.59904":
http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_4175.htm

"W32.Semisoft.59904 - Symantec.com":
http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2000-122112-5538-99

Search strategy:
rasmin mcafee
"W32.SEMISOFT.59904" mcafee

I hope this helps you. Please remember that this answer is not
considered ended until you get rid from this pestware (in the case
your computer is infected). Use the clarification feature all the
times needed, I will be glad to give you further assistance in the
cases you need it.

Hi!!

If your antivirus and the online scans gives you negative results you
can conclude that your PC is not infected by a virus.
McAfee antivirus is a good product, there are better and worse but I
do not think that you need to change it.
TrendMicro has detected some cookies that McAfee has not, this is not
necessarily a proof that TrendMicro is better, the cookies
"infections" are commonly qualified as low (or very low) risk threats
and several good antivirus bypass them unless one of them is added to
the antivirus database as a greater risk for your privacy and/or
security.
Another thing to take into account is the need to keep the antivirus
and antispyware products updated using the update tool that al of them
have, if your antivirus is not up to date is probably that it cannot
recognize a new threat that it is not in its database.
So again my first suggestion is keep your product, it is a good one,
but keep it updated; keep updated your operative system (Windows, I
guess) by installing the security patches that the developer makes
available. For example you can use Windows Update tool and do this
automatically.

Regarding the hijackthis log, according to the BleepingComputer.com
page for (follow the link in the main answer), you must do the
following:
- Download HijackThis installer to your computer's desktop.
- Run the installer it by double click on the HJTsetup.exe
- Follow the indications of the dialog boxes to complete the installation.
- Run HJT by double clik on its desktop shortcut.
- Click on the "Do a System scan and save a logfile" button.
- Your computer will be scanned and Notepad launched.
- Go to the Notepad window and go to Edit menu and select Select All
(or press Ctrl+E).
- Now go to Edit menu again and select Copy.
- Now you just Paste the copied text in a Request for a clarification
box to post it here as a request for an answer clarification.

Please try to do this, I will nalyze the log and tell you if your PC
have something else wrong.

NOTE: if you didn't scanned your computer with Ewido I suggest you to
do it, just follow the Ewido's link I gave you in the first answer.

Hi!!

I analized your HJT log and found that the following entries must be fixed:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {37D2CDBF-2AF4-44AA-8113-BD0D2DA3C2B8} - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583}
- %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @xpsp3res.dll,-20001 -
{e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network
Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)

Note that, in my understand, your computer is not infected right now
(according to the HJT log) but the listed items are unnecessary for
your system and the better thing to do is to fix them for a smooth
performance.

To do that follow these instructions:
- Restart your computer in Safe Mode; see for instructions:
"Getting into Windows Safe Mode"
http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm#02
or
"Starting your computer in Safe mode":
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406?OpenDocument&src=sec_doc_nam

- Be sure that no instances of the browser are running (all windows closed).
- Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the items listed above.
- Click the FIX CHECKED button.
- Let HJT do its work and when it finishes reboot in Normal Mode.
- Perform a new scan and post the new log.

The following can be done or not after reboot:
Download and install CleanUp! (freeware). Note that Cleanup! deletes
EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups
(that is it deletes temporary and unnecessary files:
http://www.stevengould.org/downloads/cleanup/CleanUp40.exe

"CleanUp!":
http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/index.html

Use this program once a week to delete the junk files from the temp
folders and cookies.

One more thing, I sugget you to install SpywareBlaster, a program that
prevents pestwares infections from the Internet:
"SpywareBlaster":
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

The following help brings help on using SpywareBlaster:
"Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware,
Hijackers, and Malware":

Clarification of Answer by livioflores-ga on 06 Nov 2006 18:31 PST
Hi!!

Your computer is free of pests!!!
Please consider the use of the additional software suggested in order
to keep your computer clean, Mcafee apparently has done its job
deleting or rejecting the Rasmin Trojan but has had some troubles
during the task, this is the possible origin of the error event
logged.

Remember that keeping updated your antimalware programs and the
Operative System helps to keep your computer free of pests.

Hope that this answer was useful to you.

I would really advise you get rid of McAfee, you are wasting your time with it.

get either this

www.avast.com (free)

or this

www.nod32uk.com (pay for)

Nod32 is by far the best antivirus out there and will without a doubt
tell you if you are infected. Download their free trial and run a
scan. McAfee and Symantec are the worst antivirus programs you can
use!

I disagree with the qualification that usrhlp-ga gives to Mcafee
antivirus, but I must tell that in my opinion it is not the best one.
I use Avast! (free version) with success.

I must say I agree with usrhlp regarding McAfee. Avast is great. McAfee is not.
