Lekotek, Swedish for "play library" is an international program to
lend Assistive Technology, toys and expertise to disabled children.
The first lekotek opened in 1963 in Stockholm, Sweden. Need the
address web or snail mail or email or all three. From there the
concept spread to other Scandinavian countries, Europe and the rest of
the world. For example, there are over 50 lekoteks in the US. The
first American lekotek opened in Evanston, Illinois in 1980. The first
US lekoteks were founded by Sally DeVencentis and Sharon Draznin.

The underlying concept is that early intervention through play with
adapted toys and technology can teach disabled children to deal with
the "normal" world. Some of theoretical basis for the lekotek movement
comes from work done by a British pyschologist, Elizabeth Newson. Her
book "Toys and Playthings, " (ISBN 0394428307) discusses the effect of
play on child development.

According to a Swedish web page, the first lekotek was established in
1963 by Evy Blid and Karin Stensland Junker. Its location was
Blockhusudden in Stockholm:

"Historik om lekotek
Det första lekoteket startades 1963 på Blockhusudden i Stockholm av
Evy Blid och Karin Stensland Junker."

One of the links you provided in your question is
http://www.hi.se/omhjalpmedel/svensk_hj/LEKOT.SHTM . This is an
authorative list of lekoteks in Sweden. None of the lekoteks that
appear in the Stockholm section of this list are located near
Blockhusudden, so it is most likely that the first lekotek of the
world has closed or moved to a new location.

It is probable that one of the lekoteks listed under the Stockholm
section (Järfälla lekotek, Lekoteket KS/S:t Görans barnklinik,
Lekoteket Karolinska sjukhuset, Lekoteket Huddinge sjukhus,
Omsorgsnämndens lekotek) is a continuation of the original lekotek at
Blockhusudden. However, I do not see any other ways of finding out
this than contacting the individual lekoteks by phone or e-mail. I do
beleive that this research is outside the reasonable range of a $2
question, as described in
https://answers.google.com/answers/pricing.html .

Search terms used on Google:
"första lekotek" OR "första lekoteket" [Swedish for "[the] first
lekotek"]

Above and beyond my $2 price -- Many thanks!
