What are the approximate costs to compete in the Paris-Dakar Rally?

Looking for cost/budget information for a privateer (ie:
non-sponsored) individual/team to compete in the Paris-Dakar Rally in
an auto (car/truck).

Assumptions to help identify scope of costs:
- Don't include airfare to/from Paris or Dakar
- Don't include transport costs for a vehicle to start/end the Rally
- Assume renting a car and service crew is the most viable option
(ballpark costs for purchasing a vehicle could be considered)

For bonus points/tip:
- Listing of companies that provide car and service crew rentals for the Dakar
- List of "alternative" rallies of similar caliber (ie: desert,
Africa, long distance) that may be cheaper.
