I have a Gateway computer with a NEC-7900A R/W CD-Rom. When I insert
a music CD, it works fine, but when I insert a data CD, it does not
see it. When I double click on the CD-Rom drive (after inserting a
data CD) it says, "Please insert disk into drive D:", if I insert a
music CD I can browse the CD just fine. We have not made any changes
to this system lately and no software has been recently installed.

Some more information, after running a Microsoft auto-play debug. Not
sure what it means. The auto-play states the drive is malfunctioning,
but please remember, music CD's show up, just not data CD's.

Hello solid_foundry,

Are these "official" CDs or home-produced ones?

Sometimes programs turn off the cd autoplay feature. See if this
program from windows helps:

They are "official". I tried two of them. One was a Microsoft product
CD. The other was a CD with .pdf's and .jpegs on it. Both were
purchased from the manufacturer (not burned).

We fixed the issue. Sometimes a CD player will only read audio and
not data because the head is dirty. We cleaned the CD drive and the
issue is fixed.
