as a child my father used to make us open up our vcr when it used to
overheat and put it in the fridge for an hour to cool off or butter it
if it got stuck to grease it so that we could watch a simple film. is
this normal or has this happend to anyone else?

No, this is not normal, not even a little bit. In fact, it's very
abnormal, it makes no sense at all --and both actions could damage a
VCR..

You know, there are kids on this planet without a fridge, without
butter, and without even a crappy VCR, so get over yourself.
