I am searching for a science fiction novel, and I can't seem to find
the title of it. The book, as I read in a synopsis somewhere, is about
a teenager or young man living out in the midwest (maybe Kansas or
Nebraska) finds out that he is in fact a robot, or a machine or
something of that sort. My searches have brought me only to a 1985
movie called DARRYL, but that is not what Im searching for. I'd just
like to know the name of the Novel, and author if possible.

Hi,
The basic plot of a character figuring out that he is really a robot
is fairly common in science fiction. There are dozens of novels and
short stories based on that premise. Can you remember any other
details beyond the Midwest locale? In approximatley what year do you
believe that this novel was published?

Sorry for that typo: "... approximately "

Hi gmichel,

Does "Roderick" ring a bell? Originally published in the early 1980s,
it is the autobiography of Roderick the robot.

Book 1: RODERICK or The Education of a Young Machine
Book 2: RODERICK AT RANDOM or Further Education of a Young Machine
Books 1 & 2: THE COMPLETE RODERICK
by John Sladek

Description:
Roderick Or The Education Of A Young Machine
John Sladek
"Roderick is a robot who learns. Adopted by friendly small-town folks,
Roderick is brought up a s a 'real' boy - or that's the idea. " Very
funny."

"Roderick is a robot and this is his autobiography. Sladek conveys,
with great sensitivity and insight the innocence of an artificial
intelligence and asks profound questions about mankind?s right to
manipulate others. It also portrays how a numerological mind might
structure a narrative."

AS far as year, for some reason I have in my head late 1970's to mid 1980's.
As far Roderick goes, that appears to be a good novel, but in this
novel Im describing the main character doesnt know he is a robot, he
looks human and everyone thinks he is human, then one day he has an
epiphany of sorts, and realizes that he is in fact mechanical, or
robotic. Juggler, maybe you could throw some titles at me of books
with the character figuring out he is a robot?
