I need to get the data for restaurant sales or profits for the cities
of Houston and Los Angeles for 1990 to 2001 (if this range is not
available, then the nearest possible one). The data can come in the
form of a proxy too, eg taxes paid by restaurants/bars, proportion of
business tax paid by restaurant/bars, etc.

Basically, I am interested to know how the restaurant industry in
these cities have fared during this time period. Need an answer asap.

The food and drinking places figure is perfect. However I need data
for the time period 1990 - 2001. At the very least, I need it from
1992 - 2000. It's ok if for example the figures from 1990 - 1994 are
from one source and 1995 - 2001 is from another source.
