I believe our (U.S.) satisfaction with our lives overall has dropped
over the last 30 or so year but would like to better understand that
trend and causes.

Actually, in spite of the current miseries, the general consensus
seems to be that the US happiness level has increased somewhat over
the recent years. You will find a study on this issue in the WORLD
HAPPINESS DATABASE (Erasmus University Rotterdam) that examined a
number of variables and marked the trends in flow charts and other
graphics. According to this source the happiness trend has increased
in the USA in recent years some .034 points (which is a significant
increase overall). Take a look at these and let me know if this works
for you as an answer:
