zabs-ga,
The average American will achieve a weight gain of about a pound to a
pound-and-a-half by December 31st, as a result of holiday gorging:

Day after draws crowds stuffed with guilt

You are what you eat; the average American gains a pound every holiday
season, but that extra weight usually stays on for good
I trust that's what you're looking for, but if there's anything else
you need, just let me know.
And happy holidays!

I have not found out yet if this is the correct answer. It is for a
radio show quiz in which the winner must correctly answer a series of
five questions to win the jacpot. I have researched the other four
questions and found all their answers, but this one I have not been
able to verify just yet. I will hopefully know by tomorrow. If not,
then before Friday of next week. Hope this is not too long of a wait
for your payment. Appreciate your patience.

Wow, zabs...glad to hear I hit the nail on the head. Hope it's a BIG contest.
As for the actual number, that's tough, because there are a lot of
numbers bandied about, and I don't know which one the contest
promoters have in mind.
However, I think the "one pound" figure mentioned here:
http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2006/11/11-21-06tdc/11-21-06dscihealth-04.asp
is probably the most credible, as it comes directly from a reputable
study published in the very well-respected publication, the New
England Journal of Medicine.
Let me know if you've won!
