I am a beginner/intermediate stocks and options market trader. I have
not formally taken any course or read any books on how to trade in the
US/Canadian market. I would like to find a reputable
school/organization, in Vancouver, British Columbia or available
online, that offers/teaches techniques on how to trade stocks and
options. In person lectures are preferred; online courses are okay
too. In addition, please supply a shortlist of reputable books/texts.

Hello jeywalk,

Thank you for your question.

Unfortunately, there are no reputable stock training classes that I
could find in Vancouver. However, I did find some excellent and
highly recommended online training courses that should be great for
you.

One of the most popular books for learning about the stock market
(rightly so) is "How to Make Money in Stocks" by William O'Neil.
O'Neil made enough money in stock profits to buy his own seat at the
New York Stock Exchange when he was 30 years old, and not only is his
success amazing, but he really has written a fantastic book outlining
his strategies. He calls his method the "CANSLIM" theory, and I
searched for online courses that utilize the teaching of this method,
since it is so effective and definitely not a scam like many "methods"
that online training courses might try to sell consumers.

O'Neil himself, with his company Investors Business Daily, teaches
seminars and classes, but these are only in person and only in certain
American cities.

The Online Trading Academy has free online courses that you can take,
and an expanded, in-person course that is not yet offered in
Vancouver.

Even better, many community colleges in the US offer online courses
through Ed2Go. A great example of this is from Shoreline College in
Shoreline, Washington. Here is their personal finance class:

Trading in Stock Options with Mark Quinn

You can choose almost any other community college in the US if you'd
prefer, or you can choose one from British Columbia.

Just click "British Columbia" as your province on this page and you
can see what schools offer Ed2Go in BC.

Here is O'Neil's book on Amazon:

Here are some additional books that I highly recommend for stocks and investing:

"How I Made $2,000,000 in the Stock Market" by Nicolas Darvas
http://www.amazon.com/How-Made-000-Stock-Market/dp/0818403969

"How to Trade in Stocks" by Jesse Livermore, one of the greatest stock
traders of all time

"The Successful Investor" by William O'Neil
http://www.amazon.com/Successful-Investor-Million-People-Profitably/dp/007142959X/ref=pd_sim_b_1/102-1096092-5532126

When I was first learning stock trading, I turned to these books and
they are all fantastic sources of information. If you truly read
these and follow their concepts, you won't really need any other
method.
