Hi all. I am looking to travel around the world. I am going to drive in a van. I am wondering if I can take my cat with me. He is a large Egyptian Mau cat. Worried about him getting put in quarantine which will delay our trip. I know if i travel on a plane with him he gets off with me and goes thru immediate customs usually. I will be hitting many many countries too many to list. All of Europe & Asia including Russia, 80% or Africa, USA & Canada and a little bit of South America. I need to know entry rules & regulations and where to avoid so I can plan my trip better. Thanks. | |

Nope, nope, nope, nope, not gonna happen. If your cat comes with you, you won't get into some counties. Others may immediately kill it (I have a friend who barely escaped with her dog and quite possibly her own life when sailing with her pooch to one island nation). While this is not an answer to your question-- I look forward to a GAR provinding a few referenced examples-- I can say that the patchwork of nations regulations will mean you have to have a blood test for your microchipped (or tattooed) cat several months before entry and provide an exact date of arrival along with a sheaf of documents pre-approved by import authorities for at least one country. Other nations will have different restrictions based on where you are importing the cat from and/or places it has been. Your US passport may require you to have a US Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service veterinarian examine the cat within ten days of import-- pretty tough if you are leaving Uganda for Kenya next Friday. You are soooo not gonna be able to do this. |

Oh, and you aren't able to just pop him onto a plane. Jeez, the restrictions Delta (for example) has for DOMESTIC travel are pretty amazing, just think about international travel. |

I moved from the US to England with my dog. The process was an absolute nightmare, taking over 6 months, and I was left wondering up to the last minute whether she would actually be admitted or not. I can't even imagine trying to travel to multiple countries, although within the EU the rules, I think, are pretty similar. I'm not a cat person particularly, but it's my impression that cats are less adaptable than dogs. For the UK, the appropriate website to consult is DEFRA's: http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/quarantine/index.htm. I must say that the USDA were extremely helpful in the whole process (if you're based in the US). It's likely that you'll never get your cat into a First World country after visiting countries that have lower standards of admission. In short, you should listen to markvmd, who is a vet if I am not mistaken. |
