I can see no town with this particular name, though there are some
similar names such as:

Wylnda

WYLN

Wylndy

Wylndzina

Those are just the similar "W" towns...there are also "B" and "V"
towns as well with similar names.

Can you tell us anything more about the town, or its name? Where did
you hear about it?

Would a listing of percentages of nationalities in the city and
province of Vilnius in 1897 be a sufficient answer?

Wylnia,Russia(sorry not USSR)is engraved into a tombstone indicating
the place of birth of the occupant, the dob was 9/11/1885. Please
consider the education level of the reporting parties, and possibly,a
phonetic spelling. I think that it is located in the Minsk region, but
could be in Poland.

I believe this is what you are looking for. It is not a city but a
province in what is today, Lithuania:

VILJNIA, a province of Lithuania.
Vilnija borders province of ?emaitija (Samogitia) at the northwest,
Veneda (province of Prusi) at the west, province of Palenk? at the
southwest, province of Poles? at the south, Belarus at the east,
Latvia at the north.

This is sometimes referred to as Wilnia. Wile? (the Vilnius, mentioned
above) is the Capital city of the province Wilnia (Vilnija).

You will also note that there is a provice called Wolynia (aka
Voluin?) also in Lithuanuia bordering the Ukraine, but due to the
uncanny similiarity I tend to believe the first region I mentioned,
VILJNIA (aka Wilnia), is probably what you are looking for.

Please let me know if this is satisfactory.

Well, the answer to that is "sort of". In November the service stopped
taking new questions and at the end of this month it will close for
good. We're still answering existing questions - yours, for example -
until that time.

Sad isn't it? Watch for us in other venues though. We may not be GA
after the first of the year, but the researchers have projects in the
making that may still satisfy your hunger for information.

In the meantime, did my information satisfy YOUR question?

Would be a bit difficult since the revolution didn't happen that
century and there was no USSR in 1885.
