Firstly, In my opinion, this question is VERY Vague.Because the
intrinsic problem being .. Even if someone were to download the Setup
file .. the chance that he/she would install it is unknown. Also the
same person may distribute the small installer file to others. BUT the
internet servers at download.com/netscape.com would only show one
setup file downloaded. Moreover many magazines have carried Netscape
and also IE on CDs.The number of people who installed using that route
is unknown.

Another solution could be companies like www.onestat.com which
specialise in web traffic analysis. And it is not easy to check the
installed browsers everywhere but rather to check the composition of
surfers at possible sites like Yahoo , MSN etc.
That said .. the following links from download.com give some idea of
the corresponding numbers of Setup files of IE6/Netscape 6 downloaded.
http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=Netscape+6&tg=dl-20
http://download.com.com/3120-20-0.html?qt=Internet+Explorer+6

There is an ancient(currently defunct) link of
browserwatch.internet.com
http://216.239.51.100/search?q=cache:Fnc_KfnHTk4C:browserwatch.internet.com/stats/stats.html+browser+watch+popular&hl=en
Which I recovered from the google Cache.
This site measures the types of pople who visit the Browserwatch
Site,NOT ALL the people on the net. This is also referenced by
www.browserwatch.com

Also another fact is the ability of browsers to change their User
strings.
Client-side browser detectors/sniffers may wrongly identify some
browsers - like iCab and Opera - because their userAgent strings can
be made to mimic those of other browsers

Another link(Latest) on ZDNet says that MS IE 6 is used by 97% of
surfers. But this might be factually incorrect as most linux machines
never use IE 6.
The link is:
http://zdnet.com.com/2110-1104-895496.html
Quote from the above:"Microsoft dominates the browser market with a
total global usage share of 97 percent on the Web,"
