Who said: Who you are is where you were when? It might have been
Marshal Macluan (sp?). It may have been a TV commercial in the
1960's. Thank you!

A close approximation of the quote has been attributed to William
Langewiesche, an award-winning regular contributor to The Atlantic,
who wrote, "So much of who we are is where we have been."

See the following link for an example of that attribution (about 7/8
of the way down the page):
http://www.tayara.com/club/quotes.htm

Some information about Langewiesche can be found at this link:
http://www.theatlantic.com/unbound/langew/wlbio.htm

I am posting this as a clarification because the quote is not exactly
what you asked for. If you think it is responsive, I will recast this
in answer form.

I hope this helps.

This is an exact quote. It may have been in the book The Medium is
The Massage by Marshall McLuan. I'm not sure, but I need the exact
citation if possible. Thank you very much!

Hi
I hope it's OK if I run another near-miss past you.
This time it's "What you are is where you were when" - a fairly widely
quoted phrase by Morris Massey, used in a self-development/psychology
context. The only mention I've found of your quote beginning "Who..."
is also in a self-development context, and I wonder if Massey's phrase
might have 'evolved'.
I think Massey first used the phrase in the mid-seventies and if you
think this could be your quote I would, of course, be happy to
research this further.
If you're definitely looking for "Who...", can you help us out with
any more clues? Where did you first hear or read it, for instance?
Thanks.

Hello,

Thank you for the answer about Massey. That is probably sufficient.
I can look for a Massey citation.

Best regards,

Thank you for the video citation for Massey. I have been searching
for a written source of this quote with no luck. Any input would be
appreciated.

i just skimmed through my copy of The Medium Is the Massage and was
unable to locate that quote, although I suppose it could be hiding in
there somewhere.

Hello again

Sorry to be slow getting back to you.

What I found may not cite McLuhan's(?) work because it's a video so
I'll just pass on these links, even though you may well have found
them by now:

"WHAT YOU ARE IS WHERE YOU WERE WHEN..., PARTS 1 - 2. YEAR: 1976. EACH
45 MIN. VH 2502-2503. Morris Massey discusses the formation of
personal value judgment systems and how these affect a person's
outlook."

"What You Are Is Where You Were When 90 min. OWLS, WLS

Dr. Morris Massey explains his theory of how people go through
self-programming periods from an early age. By making people aware of
this, Dr. Massey has had success in changing the ways that a person
communicates and reacts to change. Films Incorporated, 1980.

What You Are Isn't Necessarily What You Will Be 60 min. WLS
