Hello,
Can I interpret that to mean pre-cooked foods, like microwave, oven
foods, 'add hot water' and all other heat to eat/drink foods?
Including eat cold foods?
kind regards

Dear Protecto,

From my industry reading it seems that the prepared prepackaged
refrigerated food segment was estimated to be $9.5 billion in 2001,
and expected to exceed $12 billion dollars, as cited below.

-------------------------------
“While category sales in supermarkets reached an estimated $9.5
billion in 2001, the report predicts they will surpass $12 billion in
the next three years. "As new products introduced in the produce and
meat departments gain increasing penetration and consumer acceptance,
the portion of retail sales sold from full- and self-service deli
departments is likely to diminish," says Casey Roberts, v.p. of market
research for Food Spectrum and the stud/s primary author.”

….

“Prepared refrigerated food products, as defined in the report, fall
into two major market segments. The first consists of entrees, kits,
and components, which include heat-and-eat, ready-to-eat, and
ready-to-cook main meal products designed for lunch and dinner.
Falling into this segment are entrees and dinners; value-added meats
and poultry; pizza; prepackaged lunch kits; flat and filled
refrigerated pasta; and sauce, gravy and marinade products.

The second segment encompasses fully prepared salads and value-added
produce.

Categories anticipated to show the highest rates of growth are:
prepackaged, prepared salad products; prepackaged, value-added meats
and poultry; and value-added produce, according to Roberts, whose
report estimates that delis will account for 38.8 percent of
supermarket sales of prepared refrigerated food in 2005, down from
42.2 percent in 2001.”
