I have searched google under "fireproof and fire resistant lamp
shades" to no avail. Why is it that with the risk of disaster from
fire starting at a fabric lamp shade being so great that no one seem
to be manufacturing lamp shades from fire resistant or fireproof
material AND FABRIC. If they exist, where can I buy them locally and
by ordering in winston-salem North Carolina

Dear cdcmike-ga,

I agree, fire resistant lamp shades seem to be hard to find. Have you
considered spraying your old shades with a fire retardant spray? From
what I've read, it would seem the bulb is more important than the
shade's fabric in determining fire resistance.

"I use a fire retardant spray on all fabrics used to protect against
someone using too large a bulb. I recommend no larger than a 40 watt
bulb on the smaller shades and no larger than a 60 watt on larger
shades. I test all product with a 100 watt bulb when finished just to
be sure."

I know of no spray that does not need to be replinished on a periodic
basis and even then the results are minimal. The radiant heat still
gets to the substrate. There are many fire retardant materials on the
market; is there not a mfg using them

The spray is called 'Flambar' and is available from theatrical
stockists, as everything remotely fabric used on stage has to be
flameproofed. Using this would allow absolutely any fabric to be used
as a lampshade.

I am a Theatre major and have used it for years but standard testing
does not support the ratings of fireproof or fire resistant. That's
the reason they call it Flame Proof [as in open flame] which is
usually the issue in stagecraft. What I am looking for is a source
for domestic [household] lampshades made from fire rated materials
[fabric, cloth etc.] I have plenty of sources for materials coming out
of NASA heat resistant research but nobody seems to be using them to
make lamp shades. Even NOMEX [as in NASCAR driver fire suits] was
around prior to NASA. Lets try it this way; Does anybody out there
know of a company making lampshades out of NOMEX or similar material.

cdcmike,

I did a Google search for "nomex lamp" and found the following
product. Please let me know if I'm on the right track:

Lighting Universe: Uno Lamp
http://www.lightinguniverse.com/prod_pg/prod_1927.asp?&swidth=1024

I also found a list of other "flame retardants" like Kevlar. Would
those also be of interest?

It is my understanding that NOMEX is more resistant to fire that
Kevlar [primarily bullet proof not fire proof - as in bulletproof
vest] but this is a start. I had the ref. to Lighting Universe but the
product by UNO/Global is discontinued. Notice it said "NOMEX or
Cotton" with no way to spec. As best as I can tell the shade never was
offered sep. That is why I came to Google Answers. But please note
there are materials much more fire resistant than NOMEX. Thats just
the beginning. There are fabrics [mostly ceramic base] that go to
2000F. These new materials make asbestos look like a piker. It may
well be that only NOMEX is produced in large enough quantities for
fesibility of domestic mfg. There may be side effects issues as well
if you remember the baby pajamas that were recalled some years back
that were fire proof but had biological implications.

I'll try once again to refine my request:

DOMESTIC LAMPSHADES MADE USING FIRE RESISTANT CLOTH OR FABRIC [SUCH AS
NOMEX] FOR THE TRANSLUCENT PORTION OF THE SHADE. NOT LAMPSHADES MADE
USING FLAMABLE CLOTH MATERIAL AND THEN SPRAYED AFTER MFG TO REDUCE
THERE FLAMABILITY.

In other words normal looking lamp shades that are really very special
because they are fire resistant. For the record, NOMEX looks and
feels like cotton to an extent.
