How many TV sets were sold worldwide in 2002?

Ataboy bonus questions: What is the growth rate (e.g. units forecast
for 2006)?
What was the breakdown by resolution (number of HDTV/MUSE etc versus
older NTSC/PAL/SECAM)?
What was the average selling price (ASP) at retail?

Considering it is still 2002 at present, could you clarify how recent
the figures have to be? It might be easier to answer if 2001 figures
were okay.

Good catch. I'll accept the 2001 actual with an estimate of the
2002/2001 year on year change, or equivalently the 2002 estimate.

Market Research-ese:
Actual = attempt to quantify market size of a past year
Estimate = attempt to quantify market size of the present year
Forecast = attempt to quantify market size of a future year

There is no answer at this time.

Hi there!

I've taken a look to see what I can find on TV set sales on Google.
The main US source for this information is the Consumer Electronics
Association (http://www.ce.org). World-wide, the source seems to be
the "screen digest". (http://www.screendigest.com). Unfortunately,
the "European Video Yearbook" is a commercial book (see electronic
version at http://premium.screendigest.com/content/R_VYB_2001_26.stml/view).
There seems to be another book as well (a little cheaper) at:

http://www.obs.coe.int/oea_publ/yb/

I found a Word-format press release for the US from the CEA dated
January 14, 2002 at:

(Google cache link specified)

According to this document, the 2001 sales of Analog TVs was
21,166,862 + 4,630,033 + 933,086 = 26,729,981. The dollar sales of
analog TVs for the same period was 6,077,171,000. This is an average
unit price of approximately $227.

This report mysteriously omits digital television sales, but there may
be more information lying around there.

If any of this interests you, I can pursue further, but I believe that
the infomration may require an investment in a book or report.
