Question ID: 85568
Im behind the firewall of the institute here. I dont have access to
the proxy and the proxy only allows http, so outlook or any file
sharing software doesnt work at all. I make flashget and trillian to
work, but i also want outlook, winmx, emule and wsftp or some other
ftp-program to work which i cant. I wonder if there is any possibility
to do ip-tunneling but without needing another server as a friend of
mine uses the service from http-tunneling.com but their free servers
are really really slow. i found the prog http2socks which i canr
convince to work as there so many options i dont understand. see, im
no network specialist nor is english my mother tongue (but german - is
there also a german google answers in planning?) but i definitely want
these prgrams to work. how to convert the (how i understood the thing)
socks-questions of those progs into http so that the firewall wont
block them and the whole thing EASILY?

One way to achieve this is use a httptunnel between two machines, one
inside the institutions network, and one outside the network, probably
a cable or ADSL connection.

The httptunnel client would run on the machine inside the "bad"
network, and the httptunnel server would run on the machine with real
internet access.

http://www.nocrew.org/software/httptunnel.html is the URL to
httptunnel. There are windows and linux packages available.

Once you have that setup you should probably setup a PPP connection
between the two machines. The easiest way to do this is to have a
linux box on both sides, as scripting the PPP in windows is a real
pain.

Once you have both machines talking PPP to each other, then what you
will need to do is setup a firewall/ip forwarding setup on both
machines.

1) The machine in the institution will need to forward the traffic
through the PPP connection over the httptunnel, only from your own
machines in the network
2) The machine sitting on a real internet connection will need to
forward the traffic from the PPP connection out to the real internet.

What you intend to do isn't simple, and isn't really possible without
a good machine sitting on the other side. Your friend that uses the
http-tunneling.com probably has found the easiest way to do this.

They put the firewall/proxy so that you don't have real internet
access. Getting around that fact is something they don't want you to
do, and therefore it isn't "easy" or "simple".

Hope this makes sense

This program does the same as Socks2HTTP, but could be easeir to use,
and is free.

If you like this program, please send a comment saying so, and I will
post it as an answer.

HTTPort 3.SNF
http://download.com.com/3000-2155-10122346.html?tag=lst-0-1
"HTTPort creates a transparent tunnel through a proxy server or
firewall. This allows you to use all sorts of Internet software from
behind the proxy. It bypasses HTTPS and HTTP proxies, transparent
accelerators, and firewalls. It has a built-in SOCKS4 server. It
supports strong traffic encryption, which makes proxy logging useless,
and supports NTLM and other authentication schemes. Version 3.SN
features privileged status and faster access for registered users.
Version 3.SNF adds a smarter retry feature, which makes HTTPort more
resistant to proxy counter measures and the connections more stable."

Good luck, and thanks,

Why do you need to get by the proxy server? The proxy server is there
in order to prevent you from doing what you're trying to do and make
the network more secure. You're endagering the security of the entire
network by going around the proxy server and you're not supposed to do
it anyway.
