howard2,
I was quite surprised to find that I had very little success at
finding statistics on GPS units being produced.
One reference I did find was a Wired News article by Elisa Batista
(April 12, 2002):
"GPS provider SiRF Technology estimated that only 9 million GPS units
shipped in North America last year [2001]...
The FCC mandates that all mobile phones manufactured for sale in the
United States after Feb. 13, 2000, include a special method for
processing 911 calls. The carriers... have gotten the deadline
postponed."

Since the demand for GPS devices is growing due to pending enforcement
of the requirement that cell phones contain 911 locator technology,
presumably, that would indicate that more than 4,500,000 GPS units
were shipped in the first half of this year.

I regret that I was unable to supply you with more specific
statistics. Perhaps another Researcher will have a better idea where
to look.
I hope this information will be of assistance to you!
