I remember reading a book about a particular Zen Master that
specifically created a sense of fear of dying inside himself, almost
to the point of terror, so that every moment of his life he
appreciates living.

Can you point me to the book that talks about this Zen Master?

I believe that I have located it.  I had to do some digging, as it may
be out of print.

The Zen master is Suzuki Shosan, and his practice was called "death
awareness".
