Question ID: 85840
Please send information pertaining to a commercially available device
which not only converts 110v to 220v (i.e. a step-up converter), but
ALSO converts 60 MHz to 50 MHz, and how it could be obtained?
N.B. - please don't just tell me about step-up converters those are
readily available - it's the cycle conversion aspect that I must have
and I've found impossible to find - the reason is that it's for an
application that is extremely sensitive to the sound the motor makes
(i.e. and instrument for classical music).

Hello kevinjngalie,

Do you mean 60Hz to 50 Hz?

Hi kevinjngalie-ga,

If a two-step (convert voltage and frequency separately) procedure is
not acceptable, please request a clarification and I will look for an
all-in-one product for you.

As you mentioned, it is pretty easy to find transformers to convert
between 110 and 220V. I will leave the selection of one up to you, as
they vary in capacity and price and you should select one best suited
to your application.

As to the frequency conversion, you also have a number of options.
Visicomm Industries has a number of solid state frequency converters (
http://www.50hz.com/1kssdata.html and
http://www.50hz.com/1_2_3kva.html ) ranging in capacity from 700W to
2100W.

You can find competing products offering a wider range of load
capacity by searching on Google for '60 to 50Hz frequency converter'.

If this is not an acceptable answer, please request a clarification
and specify the following:
What power outlet do you have available to plug a transformer into?
(eg NEMA-15R)
What power plug do you want to plug into the transformer? (eg
NEMA-15P)
What load do you anticipate? (eg 1000W)
Do you have any other criteria that should be met? (eg size, weight,
etc.)

Hello kevinjngalie,

While I was working on an answer to your question, I was looking at
two aspects:

1. Unit Size and weight - since you may travel with your instrument,
one would prefer having a power unit that is compact - 1 unit - and
does not weigh a ton!

2. International support options in case you want to use it in other
countries. I always make it a point to look for this when it comes to
electronic devices.

I found one company, BEHLMAN that not only makes AC step-up converters
with frequency conversion within one unit but also claims it can
provide custom-made solutions.

They have some ready-made products. One that seemed not too heavy and
was also compact:

AC POWER SUPPLY FREQUENCY CONVERTER / INVERTER P1350 Power Passport

Printable Specifications Sheet (PDF) [
http://www.behlman.com/p1350_ss.pdf ]

Power: 1350VA
Dimensions: 3.5" H x 17"D x 17"W
Weight: 39lbs
Input Voltage: 120, +/-10% Frequency: 47-440Hz
Output Voltage: Dual Range; 0 - 135 & 0 -270VAC, full isolation from
input.
Output Frequency: 50Hz, 60Hz or 400Hz

This product is actually meant for providing power for testing
devices, and therefore should be quite accurate.

BEHLMAN also offers to build custom products. They may be able to
build one to meet your specific requirements.

They have a number of US & International representatives.
