Hello.

According to John Huey, who collaborated with Walton on the book "Sam
Walton: Made in America, My Story" (1992), Sam Walton was an
independent.

Walton told Huey that he had voted once for a Democrat, but Huey
described Walton as an "ideological" Republican.

From a St. Louis Post-Dispatch article about John Huey's collaboration
with Walton on the book:

"We talked about retailing in general, and something on politics,
although he wasn't consumed by politics. He said he was an independent
and had voted for one Democrat. He was an ideological Republican."

From: St. Louis Post-Dispatch, "He Wrote The Book On Sam Walton, 'The
ultimate small-town merchant' chose John Huey to tell his story"; Aug
10, 1992; John M. McGuire; page 1D.

As someone who interviewed Walton extensively for their book, Huey's
claim that Walton was an independent would seem to be very strong.
However, it's worth noting that at least one published article has
asserted that Walton was a Republican.

From the Boston Globe, March 18, 1992:

"Walton, 73, is a Republican and supports Bush. But the founder of the
nation's most successful retail chain is also a close friend of
Clinton's and has contributed to the governor's presidential campaign.
Clinton's wife, Hillary, is a member of Wal-Mart's board of directors.
Walton told employees in a recent company memo that he endorsed
Clinton in the Democratic primary but would support Bush in the fall."
From: Boston Globe, "Bush steals spotlight on Clinton's home stage";
